We have started and evolved the development of large and complex Enterprise Architecture capabilities for leading corporate organisations in the UK. Our experience of establishing what eventually become mature Enterprise Architecture capabilities has allowed us to simply become the best independent client side trusted EA partner. It is widely recognised that establishing and maintaining an Enterprise Architecture Service is essential for aligning an organisation’s IT strategy to its business strategy and for ensuring IT solutions, are designed to enable future business changes, whilst maximising the return on IT investments. We have refined our Enterprise Architecture Capability Development since 2005 to become a rich journey of value creation for our clients. To ensure our clients achieve the best value as early as possible, we have established a phased approach to Enterprise Architecture Capability Development. Our Benefits Led Enterprise Architecture Operating Model (BLEAOM) below illustrates the layers of what we would establish in a typical organisation’s Enterprise Architecture Capability: Our Approach to Enterprise Architecture Capability Development We typically approach Enterprise Architecture Capability Development of the BLEAOM in 3 stages: Setup Phase The purpose of this phase is to launch the overall project and set up all the basic requirements for the organisation Enterprise Architecture capability. This phase will look to MOBILISE the Enterprise Architecture capability ensuring that the following foundation aspects are well grounded and defined before development of architecture begins:
The ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE FRAMEWORK (EAF) will then be established in three sub iterations: EAF 0 components:
EAF 1 components:
EAF 2 components:
Operate Phase The purpose of this phase is to set up the infrastructure for a working enterprise-architecture capability. We as expert consultants will take a leading role in this work, guiding the client’s team through their first steps in its use, to create initial high-level content for the various frameworks, repositories and registers. The foundation is IMPLEMENTED through the following components of the EA operating model:
The GOVERNANCE is structured according to the following components of the EA operating model: Processes and Policies Establishment of Governance Functions and Mediums Change Leadership and Cultural Management Strategic Alignment Transition Management The ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE FRAMEWORK and REPOSITORY is then developed and populated through the following architecture domains achieving a strategic blueprint for the organisation:
Refine Phase The purpose of this phase is to develop required architectural content and put it to direct use – such as in change-projects – to create tangible business-value. Our consultants would at the back end of this phase pull back to a mentoring role, passing more of the architecture-development responsibility to the client team as capability-maturity develops. The objective being to empower the client team to take over the architecture development by the time our consulting activity ends. The activities of this phase would consist of a wide variety of iterations through the ADM cycle, often running in parallel, each covering a distinct architecture scope and set of requirements as per the list of priorities specified at the end of the preceding phase. Each iteration contributes to and updates the overall architecture body-of-knowledge, but delivers its own distinct business-value. The change projects would be driven by the priorities established in the Operate phase and typically address the following architecture domains:
